3RD ANNUAL
MENDOCINO ACOUSTIC BLUES WORKSHOP

Due to renovations taking place at the Rec Center throughout the past summer, when the workshop is usually scheduled, the third annual Mendocino Acoustic Blues Workshop was rescheduled for Friday, Nov. 7th, and Saturday, Nov. 8th, 2008. However, because of delay in the renovation process, and for personal reasons of illness in the family, the Workshop is being further postponed until its usual time next summer, dates to be announced shortly.

Things will kick off then with an introductory concert, beginning at 7 P.M. Friday, which will showcase all the instructors. Headlining the evening will be Delta Blues master Robert Lowery, born in Shula, Arkansas, in 1931, and currently living in Santa Cruz, CA. Opening for Robert will be "Boogie" Bruce Engelhardt, also from Santa Cruz; folk-blues guitar wizard John Brandeburg, from Redding, CA; local bluesman and KZYX&Z "Roots of the Blues" host, Ragtime Rick Blaufeld; and local bluesman and Son House protege, Chuck Greenberg.

Workshop classes, beginning at 10 A.M. on Saturday, will be open to all guitarists, but are particularly recommended for those who possess some guitar skills, and wish to learn finger-style blues. More advanced students will also be able to increase their knowledge of acoustic blues techniques. Hands-on guitar classes will be presented throughout the morning on Saturday, by these five expert instructors. Robert Lowery will teach Delta-style slide, and the Texas style of Lightnin' Hopkins. "Boogie" Bruce Engelhardt will demonstrate the Hokum guitar styles of Tampa Red and Big Bill Broonzy, as well as some piano tunes. John Brandeburg will be teaching advanced Piedmont styles, specializing in the tunes of Big Bill Broonzy and Blind Boy Fuller. Ragtime Rick Blaufeld will teach Piedmont and Delta blues techniques of several masters, including Mississippi John Hurt, Robert Johnson, and Blind Blake. And Chuck Greenberg will teach beginning Piedmont and Delta styles. After a break for lunch, the faculty will team up to offer demonstrations of duo techniques, including piano/guitar duets. The workshop will conclude with a participants' concert, with the faculty available for assistance. Students should bring their own guitars, and battery powered recorders, if desired. Coffee, beverages, and snacks will be available during the classes and concerts.

The fee for the whole workshop, including the Friday night concert, will be $100. Admission to the concert only will be $15. Tickets will be available in advance, or at the door. All proceeds will benefit the non-profit Mendocino Recreation and Community Center. Enrollment in the classes is limited, so early registration is suggested. Those wishing to register for classes or reserve concert tickets should contact the Mendocino Recreation Center, at 707-937-4133. Call Rick Blaufeld at 707-895-3738 for more info. All events will be held at the Mendocino Recreation Center, at School and Pine Streets, off Little Lake in Mendocino. Those who attended last year's workshop broadened their musical horizons…don't miss this rare opportunity to study with and listen to true masters of finger-style acoustic blues in an intimate setting!
