4TH ANNUAL
|
|
The fourth annual Mendocino Acoustic Blues Workshop will be presented on August 27th and 28th, 2010, at the Mendocino Recreation and Community Center. A concert, beginning at 7 P.M. Friday, August 27th, will showcase the instructors. Headlining the evening will be Delta blues and slide guitar master Bernie Pearl, from Long Beach, CA. Opening for Bernie will be Piedmont blues and ragtime guitar virtuoso JL Stiles ; local bluesman and KZYX&Z "Roots of the Blues" host, Ragtime Rick Blaufeld; and Son House protege, Chuck "Papa Charlie" Greenberg. Workshop classes will be open to all guitarists, but are particularly recommended for those who possess some basic guitar skills, and wish to learn finger-style blues. More advanced students will be able to increase their knowledge of acoustic blues techniques. Hands-on guitar classes will be presented starting at 10 A.M. on Saturday, August 28th, by these four expert instructors: Bernie Pearl will demonstrate advanced Delta and Chicago slide techniques, plus the Texas styles of Lightnin' Hopkins and Mance Lipscomb; JL Stiles will contribute his extensive knowledge of the music of Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Blake; Ragtime Rick Blaufeld will be teaching intermediate Piedmont and Mississippi blues techniques; and Chuck Greenberg will teach beginning Piedmont and Delta styles. After a break from 11:30 to 12:30 for lunch, another 90-minute class session will go until 2 P.M. Then the faculty will be available to help the students assimilate what they have learned on a one-on-one basis. The workshop will conclude with a concert at 4 P.M., featuring special guest performers John Brandeburg, from Redding CA, and Thom Davis, from Port Angeles, WA. John has been a frequent performer at this event, and Thom performed several times at the Boonville Folk-Blues Festival, in years past. Students should bring their own guitars, and battery powered recorders, if desired. Coffee, beverages, and snacks will be available during the classes and concerts. Guitar strings and other accessories will also be offered for sale, as well as CDs and DVDs featuring the instructors. The fee for the whole workshop, including the Friday night concert, will be $100. Admission to the concert only will be $15. Tickets will be available in advance on a will-call basis, or at the door. All proceeds from the event will benefit the non-profit Mendocino Recreation and Community Center's After-School Scholarship Program. Enrollment in the classes is limited, so early registration is suggested. Those wishing to register for classes or reserve concert tickets should contact the Mendocino Recreation Center, at 707-937-4133, or Rick Blaufeld at 707-895-3738. All events will be held at the Mendocino Recreation Center, at School and Pine Streets, off Little Lake in Mendocino. Those who attended previous workshops broadened their musical horizons…don't miss this rare opportunity to study with and listen to true masters of finger-style acoustic blues in an intimate setting! |
